Course synopsis

The first three months or 300 clocked hours are devoted to the basic practical aspect of cosmetology—this period is called Phase I. During this time, students are in group theory classes designed to provide them the information needed to pass the written portion of the State Board Exam. We offer a minimum of four hours of theory training per week for the entire enrollment time. At the conclusion, student must be able to demonstrate the correct procedures of the practical tasks learned and pass a written exam with a minimum of 75%.

Upon completion of Phase I, students are moved to the clinic floor. Students may now take clients and perform learned tasks on paying customers. Instructors are present to further demonstrate, supervise, and inspect students' work. Review the hours requirement table for a more detailed description of the remaining 1300 hours of coursework.

When 1600 total hours of coursework have been successfully completed and all fees have been paid, students are now eligible to take the School Board Exam. The Board evaluates practical work, theory comprehension, and professionalism. Students must achieve a minimum of 75% on both written and practical exams. If any part is failed, students may re-take school boards for a nominal fee.

Following successful completion of the School Board Exam, students are issued the documents and forms required to take the Arizona State Board of Cosmetology Exam. During the interval between the School Board and State Board Exam, students are welcome to be on our campus to practice practical skills and sit in on theory classes at no extra charge. Once state boards are successfully completed and passed, the student receives licensing to practice cosmetology in the state of Arizona. The Hair Academy offers job listings should a student need assistance obtaining employment.
